Air Conditioning Repair in Pittsburgh, PA

When the AC quits during a humid Pittsburgh heat wave, we find the actual fault and get cool air moving again the same day.

4.9★ · 51 reviews · Since 2015

Pittsburgh summers are humid, and a central air conditioner that stops cooling turns a home warm and sticky fast — hard on kids, older adults, and anyone working from home. Werth-Aire repairs central AC systems across the city and suburbs, usually the same day, with a diagnosis that follows the real failure instead of jumping to the most expensive part.

A no-cooling call can come from a dozen causes: a failed capacitor or contactor, a seized compressor, a frozen evaporator coil, a clogged condensate line, a tripped float switch, low airflow from a dirty filter, or a refrigerant charge that has dropped because of a leak. We test the system methodically, show you what we find, and quote the repair flat-rate before we begin.

If your system is low on refrigerant, we treat that as a leak to find and fix — not a charge to top off every summer. Repeatedly adding refrigerant to a leaking system wastes money and is bad for the equipment and the environment. We locate the leak, explain the options, and put the fix in writing.

Safety first. An AC repair is rarely a gas hazard, but a few cautions matter: do not handle the refrigerant lines, do not repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping, and if you see a burning smell or smoke, shut the system off at the breaker. During a dangerous heat wave, check on children, older adults, and anyone with health conditions while you wait for us.

No cooling? Do this first (safely)

1

Check the thermostat mode

Set it to Cool (not just Fan) and a few degrees below the room reading. In fan-only mode the blower runs without cooling, which feels like warm air.

2

Replace a dirty filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow and can freeze the coil. Swap it if it is dirty — it is the most common quick fix for weak cooling.

3

Thaw a frozen coil

If you see ice on the lines or indoor unit, switch the system to Off, then set the fan to On to help it thaw. Do not chip at the ice or keep running a frozen system.

4

Clear the outdoor unit

Make sure the condenser has a couple of feet of clearance and is not packed with leaves or grass. Reset a tripped breaker once only, then call us if it trips again.

Signs your AC needs service

  • The system runs but blows warm or room-temperature air
  • Weak airflow from the vents even with a clean filter
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan will not start
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
  • Water pooling around the indoor unit or a backed-up condensate drain
  • Short cycling, or the AC trips the breaker
  • A noticeable spike in the electric bill during cooling season

What our ac repair covers

Electrical faults

Capacitors, contactors, relays, and wiring problems that leave the outdoor unit humming or dead.

Refrigerant & coils

Leak detection, proper recharge, and frozen-coil and airflow diagnosis handled by EPA-certified techs.

Condensate & water

Clogged drains, failed float switches, and pump problems that cause leaks and shutdowns.

Compressor & fan motors

Diagnosis and repair of failing compressors and condenser-fan motors, with an honest repair-or-replace call.

Our process

1

System diagnosis

We check airflow, the filter, the thermostat, capacitor and contactor, refrigerant pressures, and the condensate path to isolate the real fault.

2

Explain the finding

You see what we found and why. If refrigerant is low, we treat it as a leak to locate — not a top-off.

3

Flat-rate quote

We quote the repair in writing before starting, with the diagnostic fee and its treatment explained.

4

Repair & verify cooling

We complete the repair, verify supply-air temperature and proper operation, and clear the condensate line.

The airflow-first rule behind every AC repair

Before anyone touches refrigerant, airflow gets checked — because restricted airflow mimics almost every other cooling fault and causes real damage on its own. A filter left too long starves the coil until it freezes, which stops cooling entirely and, if the system keeps running, can slug liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. We verify the filter, coil, and blower first, then test the capacitor and contactor under load, and only then read refrigerant pressures. If the system is genuinely low, we treat it as a leak for our refrigerant leak detection to find — not a top-off that quietly leaks back out by next summer.

What affects the cost

AC repairs are quoted flat-rate before work begins. The main cost drivers:

  • The failed part — a capacitor or contactor is inexpensive; a compressor or coil is a major repair
  • Whether the system needs leak detection and refrigerant, and the refrigerant type
  • Condensate or drainage corrections needed to protect the home
  • The age of the system and availability of matching parts

Published Pittsburgh estimates place AC repair around $160–$700 depending on the component and refrigerant work involved. Ask whether the diagnostic, parts, labor, and any refrigerant work are listed separately — ours are.

Repair or replace? Use the evidence

A central AC is a 12–15 year system. A capacitor or contactor is a clear repair; a failed compressor or a major coil leak on an aging unit is a decision point. We give you the honest repair-versus-replace comparison rather than defaulting to a new system. Published Pittsburgh central-AC replacement runs roughly $3,200–$5,200 for planning context.

When repair makes sense

  • The failed part is inexpensive and accessible — a capacitor, contactor, or fan motor
  • The system is under ~12 years old and otherwise sound
  • It still uses current refrigerant and the charge is correct after a leak is fixed
  • The repair restores full cooling without masking a larger problem

When replacement deserves a look

  • The compressor has failed on an older unit, or a major evaporator-coil leak is found
  • The system still uses R-22, which is phased out and expensive to service
  • It is 12–15+ years old with rising bills and repeat breakdowns
  • The home stays humid or cools unevenly even after a proper diagnosis

If replacement is the smarter spend, compare a high-efficiency AC installation line by line — sizing, permits, warranty, and startup testing — before you decide.

Why choose Werth-Aire for ac repair

We diagnose the real fault instead of guessing, treat low refrigerant as a leak to fix rather than a summer top-off, and get cool air moving again the same day during a Pittsburgh heat wave.
